i made it through the wilderness. yeah, i made it through-oo-oo

call me madonna. having little to no money in my purse...just kidding. different long-winded story:
this morning was genuinely embarrassing (as my facebook status can attest). i woke up after 6 hours of sleep (not bad), printed off the rough draft of my paper instead of the final draft, realized after i sent it to the printer, was too late to run back to my room two floors up and one dorm over to send down the final draft, fixed the printer ("paper jam" means it really just needs more paper) so that i could actually have something to hand in to my professor, and rushed off to class. got there, everyone was already divided into groups, discussing their papers, prof. engbers was elsewhere. i began to look for a small group i could join. looked around, people i didn't recognize were looking back. staring back. i was two hours early to class with a wrinkled rough draft of a crappy C- paper clutched in my shaking hand. i realized there was no graceful way to leave, so i just stuffed everything back in my bag and ducked out. on my way out the building i caught sight of prof. engbers entering the english department with his hat and coat still on. while walking home more people than usual made eye-contact with me. they knew. i know they knew. everyone could tell that i'm a class A fool. i think there's a red letter on my breast, designated only for the completely addle-brained. i made it into the safety of my room, close to tears. it was too much, too early in the morning. i told doni what happened and she laughed. i shall not miss her over break.

but she made a valid point - i went through quite a few horrors this morning and emerged relatively unscathed. i made it through the wilderness and remain a virgin.

i think it's worth noting that i alluded to both madonna and moby dick in one fell swoop.
anyway, i think i'm ok now. except sometimes the bemused looks of those people in that classroom keep floating before my eyes every so often. it's unsettling.

  1. hey, at least you didn't bust into a class, thinking you were late, proceed to the computer because you thought you had to give a presentation that day, only to realize that (a) you didn't, and (b) it wasn't the correct class.

that never happened to me, but really: that would probably be worse.
